In the 1970s, scientist Ellen Langer did an experiment at a library's copy machine. She asked to cut in line to make copies. In the first case, she asked "Excuse me. May I use the copy machine?", in this case, 60% of people agreed. In the second case, she gave a reason, "Excuse me. May I use the copy machine because I'm in a hurry? This time, 95% agreed. But, in the third case, she gave a silly reason, “Excuse me. May I use the copy machine because I have to make some copies?”, 93% still said yes. So, she found that any reason, even a silly reason, can help get what we need.
